Strange smells coming from the drains in your home? Water all over the floors? Cold showers in the middle of winter? Plumbing problems can occur at any time in our home, and in general, you want to have them fixed as soon as possible to avoid further problems down the road. But, there’s no doubt that some issues are more urgent than others, and it’s worth paying for repairs. So, what exactly qualifies as an emergency and when should you be calling a plumber for emergency repairs? Here are our top 4 reasons you need an emergency plumber:
If you have clogs in your drains or toilet, you want to get it fixed as soon as possible. A toilet that won’t flush could be your worst nightmare – particularly one that still fills up with water (or worse, overflows). Your first option is to try a metal coat hanger. Pull it apart (keeping the hook in place) and push it into the drain to see if you can find what’s causing the clog. Failing that, head to a hardware store and purchase a plunger so you can get those pipes unclogged yourself. It’s a lot cheaper than calling a plumber if you don’t need to. But, if it doesn’t work, you need to get the professionals in. Never leave a clogged drain or toilet too long.
The only thing worse than having to get out of bed on a cold day is getting up, and there’s no hot water! A cold shower in any season is not something you want to deal with, which is why it’s important to maintain your hot water system (and you can even have it checked before the cold season hits). You might only have boiling hot water, which is also a sign your system isn’t working properly. If you find yourself with hot water problems, call a professional.
Leaking pipes and leaking taps might not seem like a big deal today, but if you leave them too long – they could become a huge and expensive disaster tomorrow. A small leak can quickly become a big problem, particularly if the water ends up getting into your cupboards, and even into the foundation of your home (for significant leaks in underground pipes). Leaking taps might not seem like an emergency, and often all you need is a bucket for a temporary fix. But with either of these, you’re losing water, and this can lead to excess water usage charges on your utility bill that you don’t need! Save yourself money, and have it fixed as soon as you realize it’s a problem.
This one is probably the most important. If you run your appliances or heating systems on gas, and all of a sudden the gas stops working, or you start to smell gas, there are a few essential steps you need to take. First, turn off the valve as soon as possible (if you know where it is), then give us a call. If you can’t find the valve, walk outside (taking the family
with you) until you’re a safe distance away from the home, then use your phone. Don’t leave the area, and make sure you can keep an eye on your house (from a safe distance) until an emergency plumber arrives.
